Chimps Train for Space Tests (Universal Newsreel, Jan 1961)

Description

The original release sheet reads: CHIMPS TRAIN FOR SPACE TESTS At Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, chimpanzees train to go into space. The monkey astronauts will ride the capsule designed for the first man in space, both testing equipment and providing medical data. Scenes show chimps getting physical examinations, being trained to push levers on light signals, and in their space gear. BOATING NEWS: NATIONAL BOAT SHOW opens in New York City, with thousands of winter-bound yachtsmen and landlubbers, too, flocking on board to see a vast array of dreamboats of the future, including combination helicopter and outboard boat, and of the present, super-deluxe $86,000 cabin cruiser. HYDROFOIL SPEEDSTER In Holland, a new hydrofoil craft that skims above the surface at some 30 knots is tested. It will go into service in Ecuador. CHIC CANINE COIFFURES In Amsterdam, Holland, dogs double up with their fashion conscious owners at the hairdressers, emerging trimmed, curled, and primped in the height of fashion. And the pooches seem to love it, turning up their noses at out-of-style dogs on the street . SPORTS GARMISCH SKI MEET Soviet skier Kiba Tzakadze takes top honors in the first big ski meet of the year on the big Olympic slide at Garmisch. Germany's Helmut Recknagle takes second place with well nigh perfect form. It's superb competition by seventy top jumpers from all over Europe.
