Description

The original release sheet reads: POPE JOHN XXIII-A TRIBUTE At no time in history did the lingering illness of a pope cause such concern among peoples of all faiths as did that of Pope John XXIII. Protestant and Jew, Buddhist and Catholic-all prayed for the man who had become a symbol of interfaith cooperation and goodwill. Angelo Giuseppe Roncali became a Cardinal in 1953 and a brilliant carerr as a Papal diplomat led him to the throne of St. Peter in 1958. He plunged energetically into the duties of office and became known as the "Pope of Peace" and noted for his calling an Ecuminical Council to work for church reform and the unity of all faiths. TEST NEW SUBMARINE CHASER Working on hydrofoils that lift the hull above the water, the sub killer "High Point" undergoes tests. It can make speeds of 50 miles an hour, driven by dual 3,000 horsepower engines. HONOR BLIND STUDENTS IN THE WHITE HOUSE President Kennedy presents awards to four blind students who are graduating with high marks from various universities. They didn't let blindness become a handicap and three will become teachers and the fourth a minister. YESTERDAY'S BIG STORY AUGUST 19, 1942 Allied commandos raid Dieppe on the French coast and write a brilliant chapter in military daring and courage. Most of the 7,000 man force is made up of Canadians who make a hit-and-run raid to prove to the Germans that their defenses along the coast are far from invulnerable. Valuable lessons were learned in the strike that was used 22 months later when D Day arrived.
