French Fliers Set New Mark (Universal Newsreel, Aug 1933)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. FRENCH FLIERS SET NEW MARK: FLOYD BENNETT FIELD, NY - Remarkable close-ups of Maurice Rossi and Paul Codos leaving the Brooklyn airport in their Bleriot monoplane on the start of a long distance hop, which breaks the existing world’s non-stop air record by almost four hundred miles, when they land at Rayack, Syria 5700 miles away. 2. STRIKERS BATTLE WITH TROOPS: BROWNSVILLE, PA - Unusual scenes in the Fayette County coal-fields as National Guardsmen set-up machine guns and patrol the mines, while President Roosevelt’s National Relief Administration attempts to arbitrate the dispute between miners and their employees. BOONVILLE, NY - Determined farmers mobilize to prevent milk deliveries to wholesale shippers in a dozen up-state countries until prices are raised. Violence and bloodshed follows clashes between striking dairymen and State troopers. 3. U.S. RETAINS WIGHTMAN CUP: FOREST HILLS, NY - Dramatic and thrilling views on the courts of the West Side Tennis Club as America’s women racquet aces outplay the daughters of Great Britain and win the classic sports contest after a grueling singles match taken by Helen Jacobs of California from Margaret Scriven of England, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5. 4. KING GEORGE PILOTS YACHT: COWES, ENGLAND - Unusual views of the historic “Royal Yacht Squadron Regatta,” in which Britain’s ruler sails aboard his ship the “Brittania,” in a race won by the “Velsheda,” John Bull’s challenger in the forthcoming “America’s Cup Races.” 5. HULL AND THE PRESIDENT CONFER: HYDE PARK, NY - Intimate scenes of the Secretary of State on his visit to the Summer White House to make a personal report of the results of the London Economic Conference — a significant tete-a-tete that silences all predictions of the grey-haired Tennessean’s possible resignation. 6. RACING SEASON OPENS AT SPA: SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - Colorful scenes at the famous track as C.V. Whitney’s “Equipoise,” one of the finest horses ever bred in America, running on a muddy track with Sonny Workman up, flashes past the stands to win the Wilson Stakes, feature event of the initial day’s program, in remarkably fast time. 7. STRATOSPHERE BALLOON FALLS: CHICAGO, IL - Remarkable scenes on Soldier Field as Lieutenant T.G.W. Settle, U.S.N., starts his projected flight into the upper regions of the atmosphere and hectic scenes in a nearby railroad yard following the big gas bag’s crash due to a leaky valve. 8. FLOOD CAUSES $1,000,000 DAMAGE: DENVER, CO - Appalling scenes of the destruction caused by raging waters which sweep through the city following the collapse of a dam, taking three lives, driving thousands from their homes, taxing relief agencies to the limit and causing tremendous property loss.
